I Went to My First Political Meeting

I think this may actually be a first for me… Last night my partner and I went on an interesting date, it was a NDP political meeting. Actually, to be specific, it was a meeting about the so-called Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP).

Ever since I joined the NDP, I’ve been wanting to go to some sort of meeting. Partially because it would be a first, but more importantly because I’m starting to want to get political information and information about ‘the issues’ first hand these days.

I didn’t actually realize that the meeting last night would be about the SPP. All I really knew was that Victoria, MP, Denise Savoie would be there to talk about Canadian Sovereignty. As it turns out, this forum was part of the NDP’s national tour to speak out on the SPP.

The UVIC Young New Democrats hosted the Victoria forum and Denise was joined by Peter Julian, MP (Burnaby-New Westminster), NDP trade critic and Murray Dobbin, a Vancouver author and activist.

It was a very enlightening evening and all three speakers were both passionate and very knowledgeable on what is known about this secret takeover. There was a good turnout, I thought. About 100 people turned out and filled the lecture room at UVIC for this low-key event.

As soon as I get my notes straightened out and a few points clarified, I’ll probably share a few of the things that I learned about the SPP during the forum.
