There’s a new strain of Staph infection, known as MRSA USA300 that researchers have recently identified as being multidrug-resistant.
The new bug is spreading among gay men in San Francisco, Boston, New York and Los Angeles and I imagine that any area that has high populations of gay men. However, San Francisco seems to be the area where the incidence/risk is highest currently.
The infection frequently appears as an abscess or cellulitis in the buttocks, genitals, or perineum, and male–male sex was a risk factor.
The research reports that the multidrug-resistant USA300 MRSA infection is especially common among men who have sex with men. And that it might be sexually transmitted in this population.
