Another update on the gay organ donor story…
Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman; Canada’s only openly gay provincial health minister is giving Health Canada a blast. He says that “Surely in this day and age our doctors … are sophisticated enough to judge the risks posed by a prospective donor without resorting to ghettoizing communities.”
“Why would a regulation be written that ropes off prospective donors?”
And a spokeswoman for the federal health minister is saying, “Health Canada regulations do not prevent gay men from donating organs. The regulations are very clear that the final decision always rests with the recipient patient and the transplant doctor.”
