Do Gay Sports Teams Promote ‘Apartheid in Sports’?

Gay Sports NewsPersonally, I don’t think that gay sports teams promote ‘apartheid in sports’, but Northern Ireland’s, Sports Minister Edwin Poots does.

The Ulster Titans Rugby Club, Northern Ireland’s only gay rugby team is under fire today from Northern Ireland’s, Sports Minister Edwin Poots, (Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure to be exact).

Poots says, “It would be unacceptable to produce an all-black rugby team or an all-white team or an all-Chinese team. To me it’s equally unacceptable to produce an all-homosexual rugby team and I find it remarkable that people who talk so much about inclusivity and about having an equal role in society would then go down the route of exclusion.”

However, like many gay sports teams, the Ulster Titans Rugby Club is actually an inclusive club that was indeed formed to promote sports in the gay community.

Poot’s claims are misleading in the first place, but another thing to think about is whether or not he would welcome women in a ‘regular’ rugby team. Somehow, I think not. There are women’s rugby clubs but, (and I could be wrong, maybe things have indeed changed) women generally aren’t welcome in ‘regular’ mens rugby clubs or teams. In fact, there are national rugby teams for women. No doubt the minister has a pat answer for that one too that’s equally disingenuous.
