A Taste of Nova Scotia
One of the things that I like to do when I’m traveling is to sample the local wines. My recent trip to Nova Scotia was no exception.
For some reason JOST Vineyards is a familiar name to me, however, prior to my trip to Nova Scotia I hadn’t had the pleasure of sampling their wines out. Moreover, and this I’m almost ashamed to admit, I didn’t realize that JOST Vineyards is a Nova Scotian winery. Worse still, I hadn’t even realized that Nova Scotia has become quite the noted wine region here in Canada.
Well, now that I know the secret, and I swear that Nova Scotia is trying to keep it a secret from wine lovers elsewhere, I’m going to be keeping an eye out for wines from that neck of the woods.
My partner and I love having wine with our meals, we love having wine anytime actually, so when we arrived at our destination in Nova Scotia, one of the first things we did was to stop in at the local Nova Scotia Liquor Board store to pick up a few bottles to go with our dinners. We were staying at a guest house in Shelburne and had most of our meals in our fabulous guest suite.
The wine that we decided to try was the 2004 Marechal Foch from JOST Vineyards*.
Jost Vineyards describes this wine as a dry red wine with a sweetness index of 0. (0 being dry and 5 being sweet). My partner and I both disagree. We found the Marechal Foch to be sweet. I wouldn’t say very sweet, but our bottles of wine were definitely sweet; perhaps a 3. For us that was not a problem though. Perhaps our taste buds are damaged and we thought that the wine was sweeter than it really is. Further taste tests are needed to resolve this slight discrepancy I think.
I do agree that this wine is fruity with red berry and earthy flavours though. When I was savoring it I couldn’t help but feel that I was truly drinking in and absorbing a bit of Nova Scotia. There was a definite Maritime feel to it. I hope that makes sense.
Would I try this wine or any other wines from JOST Vineyards? Absolutely! I may have to wait until the next time I’m in Nova Scotia for that pleasure though.
Jost wines are sold directly from their winery store, and private wine stores. A limited variety of their wines is also available from the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and its outlets, as well as the New Brunswick Liquor Board, the Prince Edward Liquor Corporation, Newfoundland. Jost wines are also apparently available in Alberta and Manitoba.
* (The ‘O’ in JOST actually has a macron on top but that doesn’t render very well in online type.)
