23rd Torino GLBT Film Festival 'Da Sodoma a Hollywood'The 23rd Torino GLBT Film Festival “Da Sodoma a Hollywood” took place April 17th-25th 2008 and as mentioned it was huge. Also as mentioned, I’d be posting more on the awards. Here’s the full list:

23rd Torino GLBT Film Festival Awards List:

BEST FEATURE FILM
La León directed by Santiago Otheguy (Argentine/France, 2007)

“for its visual impact, its concise story-telling and its skillful depiction of uncontaminated nature”.

The Special Jury Award goes to:

Was am Ende zählt (Nothing Else Matters) directed by Julia von Heinz (Germany, 2007)
“for its modern and sensitive depiction of two young girls’ desire to create unique family”.

and:

Les Chansons d’amour directed by Christophe Honoré (France, 2007)
“because it offers a different way of seeing life, overcoming gender boundairies”.

BEST SHORT FILM

Alguma Coisa Assim (Something Like That) directed by Esmir Filho (Brazil, 2007)

“The award for the best short film goes to a film that eloquently captures the fragile transition from the adolescence to adulthood, both in a gay context and universally.

Through the story of two teenagers first trip to the gay bar, the film weaves, both realistically and metaphorically- and with excellent cinematography, sound, editing and performances- a specific emotional moment in the lives of its characters.”

A Special Mention goes to:

En liten Tiger directed by Anna-Carin Andersson (Sweden, 2006)

“a beautiful and comedic exploration of owning one’s self ”.

BEST DOCUMENTARY

A Jihad for Love directed by Parvez Sharma (USA/Germany/UK/France/Australia, 2007)

A Special Mention goes to:

Darling! The Pieter Dirk Uys Story di Julian Shaw (Australia, 2007)
“for honoring a socially and politically challenging revolotionary throghout apartheid and the AIDS crisis. For taking to task a government’s genocide. For following his inspiration since the age of 15 to produce this important film”

and to:

Behikvot Ahatiha Ahasera (The Quest for the Missing Piece) di Oded Lotan (Israele, 2007)

“a documentary with inventive and humorous storytelling with creative and bold presentation along with humility and self reflection”.

THE “NUOVI SGUARDI” AWARD

Assigned by the selection committee of the festival Ricke Merighi, Davide Oberto, Cosimo Santoro:

“It has been very difficult choosing the winner of the first edition ‘Nuovi Sguardi’ Award.

This award would like to reflect the evolution of the queer cinema, underlying films that, apart from the issues faced, use forms and languages in which queer becomes an interpretation of reality”.

The Nuovi Sguardi Award goes ex-aequo to:

Panorama directed by Loo Hui Phang (France, 2007)

“for being able to transform grafic signs into moving images in an original way and to create a free and suggestive universe”.

and to:

Solos directed by Kan Lume and Loo Zihan (Singapore, 2007)

“for creating a film in which the word is not essential to give rise to emotions and the power of images turns personal experiences into universal experiences”.

A Special Mention goes to:

Love and Words directed by Sylvie Ballyot (France, 2007)

“for its ability of facing political and theoretical issues in an original and complex way through a personal and poetic point of view”.

THE AUDIENCE AWARDS:

Were the World Mine directed by Tom Gustafson (Usa, 2008)

BEST SHORT FILM
Café com leite directed by Daniel Ribeiro (Brasile, 2007)

BEST DOCUMENTARY
