Global LGBT Rights NewsWEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) — The fight for the civil rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) community has moved to the global stage as activists have pushed for equal rights throughout the world.

In June the City of West Hollywood’s popular Human Rights Speaker Series will focus on “The Globalization of LGBT Rights” on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Silver Screen Theatre at the Pacific Design Center, located at 8687 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.

This provocative panel discussion will assess the global movement of LGBT rights and will be moderated by West Hollywood Councilmember and Law Professor John Heilman. Speakers will include Jon W. Davidson, Senior Council for LAMBDA Legal and one of the lead attorneys in the historic California Supreme Court case which legalized same-sex marriage; Paula Ettelbrick, Executive Director for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission; Svyatoslav Sementsov, Belarusian Gay Activist; and others.

“Advances to LGBT rights that occur or don’t occur in other countries, affect the climate in our own country,” said West Hollywood Councilmember John Heilman. “That is why we must oppose human rights violations wherever they occur and support efforts towards equality throughout the world,” he continued.

“A Call to Action” dessert reception will immediately follow the discussion. Admission is free. Complimentary parking is available at the Pacific Design Center (enter parking lot from San Vicente Boulevard).

The City of West Hollywood’s Human Rights Speakers Series was established in the year 2000 to expand community awareness and understanding of critical human rights concerns that challenge our daily lives.
