The Case for Making Changes vs Lawsuits
Filed Under Court Cases, GLBT Equality, Gay Marriage, Legal | June 11th, 2008
This week, nine LGBT organizations in the U.S. are urging couples marrying in California to ‘Make Change, Not Lawsuits’
Four LGBT legal organizations and five other leading national LGBT groups have issued a statement entitled “Make Change, Not Lawsuits.”
The organizations are as follows: ACLU, The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, GLAAD, Lambda Legal, GLAD, NCLR, Human Rights Campaign, Freedom to Marry, and the Equality Federation.
The statement explains that while couples who go to California to marry should ask friends, neighbors and institutions to honor their marriages, they generally shouldn’t sue the federal government or, if they are from other states, go sue their home state or their employer to recognize their marriage or open up the health plan. The statement says that ill-timed lawsuits are likely to set the fight for marriage back, and that there are other ways to fight which are more likely to win.
