My Reading List for 2008 So Far
Filed Under Books & Mags, Shopping | July 10th, 2008
I’ve always been an avid reader, but for the last couple of years I just haven’t felt that I’ve read enough books so, I’ve set about to rectify that ‘problem’. A quick glance at my bookshelves tells me that I’m on track.
Here’s a list of the books I’ve read so far this year:
Agatha Christie novels: I’ve been a huge fan of Agatha Christie since my early teens. Last year I started going through all her mysteries again. I have a huge collection, finished those off and then went to the bookstores to pick up the ones that I haven’t read.
I’ve already mentioned at this site that I’ve read ‘A Murder Is Announced’, which is a Miss Marple Mystery. But I’ve also read ‘The Moving Finger’ which is also a Miss Marple Mystery and this one also happens to have a homosexual character in it. Yes, I did enjoy this story.
As for the Hercule Poirot mysteries, I’ve read ‘Cards on the Table’ this year. This is one of the few Poirot mysteries that I hadn’t read before and I quite enjoyed it.
I also picked up and read another Tommy and Tuppence mystery; ‘Partners in Crime’. I enjoyed this novel for several reasons. It’s actually a collection of separate mysteries which could be told on their own, (and they have been on TV actually) but they’re all strung together nicely into one overall book.
I’ve briefly mentioned that I’ve re-read Philip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials Trilogy’ again this year. But I’ve also re-read Pullman’s ‘Sally Lockhart Trilogy’ which includes ‘The Ruby in the Smoke’, ‘Shadow in the North’, and ‘The Tiger in the Well’. I’ve also read ‘The Tin Princess’, which is really book four of this series, even though Sally Lockhart is a very minor character in this one. Yeah, those books are made for young adults, but I can’t help myself; Philip Pullman is a most excellent storyteller.
Speaking of books for young readers… Angie Sage has also captured my attention and imagination. I devoured the first three of her Septimus Heap books last year. As soon as ‘Queste’ came out this year my partner bought that one for me and I promptly locked myself away and finished that one off in quick order too. If you enjoyed the Harry Potter series and you haven’t checked out Septimus Heap, you should.
I also read for the first time the H.G. Wells inspired book that Stephen Baxter wrote: ‘The Time Ships’. Read my review on that here.
I’ve also become a fan of Dan Brown’s writing. I’ve read ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels & Demons’ this year.
While I was in Nova Scotia earlier this year, I picked up a couple of good books on the Oak Island mystery; ‘Oak Island Gold’ and ‘Oak Island Secrets’.
Goodness, I’ve just realized that this is only a small portion of the books I’ve read thus far this year. This will have to do for now as this list is starting to get a bit large. If you’re looking for some good summertime reading and haven’t read any of those books, check them out; there are a lot of great stories there.
