The Cheesiest Movie I’ve Watch This Year

Lobster Man From Mars on DVDWithout a doubt, Lobster Man from Mars is the cheesiest movie I’ve watched all year. Normally, I probably wouldn’t even mention this movie here at Gay News Bits, but I do have an excuse, as you will find out soon enough…

But first, a description of the movie, “borrowed” from the back cover of the DVD:

It boggles the mind…giant seafood from outer space trying to steal the earth’s air. This absurd sci-fi farce is the stuff of which cult classics are made. Movie mogul J.P. Shelldrake (Tony Curtis) discovers he’s in desperate need of a tax loss to keep the I.R.S. off his back. He has to find a “loser” motion picture for his company to release. In walks boy producer, writer, director Stevie Horowitz (Dean Jacobson) with his homemade epic LOBSTER MAN FROM MARS. Producer Stevie has liberally “borrowed” almost every comedy bit ever written for his zany, Martian-invades-earth parody. After a screening, Shelldrake believes it’s the perfect film for his needs. Snicker and chuckle your way through this uproarious comedy to find out who actually gets the last laugh.

After watching Lobster Man from Mars I had to wonder if writer, director, Stanley Sheff was the one who got the last laugh… Is Stanley really Stevie Horowitz?

Still, this is one cheesy movie that I couldn’t bear to not watch from beginning to end. It kind of gripped me with fascination. It also kind of reminded me of the movie, Ed Wood (kind of); or perhaps of an Ed Wood type of movie would be a better description…

Also of interest is the extras section of this DVD. It included: Deleted Scenes, (which I didn’t check out), the Theatrical Trailer, the Production Stills Library, Stanley Sheff’s first movie “Sinister Flesh” (a B&W ’silent film’ with a Wurlitzer organ providing the spooky accompaniment.), and…

…On camera commentary with Stanley Sheff and Star Trek’s George Takei.

Yes, George Takei is indeed my excuse for posting about Lobster Man from Mars.

Normally, I don’t even check out the commentary on DVDs but while I was scrolling through the various options in the extras menu, I accidentally clicked on the ‘commentary’ option. The movie started up again, (I had already watched it) and up pops Stanley Sheff introducing his co-host George Takei.

So tickled with this surprising development, I settled back into the sofa and ended up watching Lobster Man from Mars a second time. It made for fascinating watching the second go around.

So, if cheesy, or campy, B-movie, sci-fi fare is your thing and you haven’t got Lobster Man from Mars in your collection, I can highly recommend that you get yourself a copy.
