Movie Monday: Gay Movies New to DVD
Filed Under DVDs, Gay Entertainment, Gay Film
The following is a short list of gay themed movies that are new to DVD that have caught my interest. Most are due to be released in the next couple of months; one of them is out on DVD now.
Before I Forget: Jacques Nolot stars and directs a tale of a downward spiraling gay gigolo, struggling to cope with his advancing age, poverty, loneliness, writers block, and the increasing complications of HIV disease. When his wealthy benefactor dies after thirty years of lavish support, his inheritance is challenged by the benefactor’s family, leaving him destitute. Underscoring his every move is the fear of being forgotten, or worse: dying back where he started on the streets. Young hustlers, drugs, alcohol, and countless cigarettes provide momentary distractions, but ultimately, he must face his inner demons in order to be free of them.
Before I Forget is due to be released on DVD, September 2, 2008.
The Boys in the Band: Looks like Paramount Pictures has dug into their vaults and discovered this screen gem from 1970 which is based on Mart Crowley’s off-Broadway play of the same name. Set in the 1960’s, a group of gay friends at a birthday party dissect their lives and relationships when a married straight friend unexpectedly appears.
Directed by William Friedkin and starring: Kenneth Nelson, Peter White, Leonard Frey, Cliff Gorman, Frederick Combs, Laurence Luckinbill, Keith Prentice, Robert La Tourneaux and Reuben Greene.
The Boys in the Band is due to be released on DVD, November 11, 2008.
Boystown: In BOYSTOWN (Chuecatown), Victor (Pablo Puyol of 20 Centimeters) is a real estate agent in the quickly gentrifying neighborhood of Chueca in Madrid. But he hides a terrible secret; his apartments become available for sale when he murders the elderly women owners and disguises them as suicides. Then Victor quickly refurbishes the apartments to upwardly-mobile gay couples because his ultimate goal is to transform the neighborhood into a hip gayborhood like the Castro in San Francisco and Chelsea in New York.
The latest victim’s apartment is next door to gay couple Ray (Carlos Fuentes of Kilometer Zero) and Leo (Pepón Nieto of Bulgarian Lovers) who eventually inherit the apartment and offer it as a gift to Ray s mother Antonia (Concha Velasco of Kilometer Zero). But Victor only wants high income gays to move in and he begins a plot to remove Antonia from the premises. Toss in the eccentric Inspector Mila (Rosa Maria Sardà of All About My Mother) and her charmingly clueless son Luis, assigned to investigate the murders, and soon the neighborhood of Chueca is brimming with comic mishaps, sexy seductions and more murders!
Boystown is scheduled for release, around October 28, 2008.
Stealth: Directed by Lionel Baier (Garçon Stupide) this sweet, oddball story shuffles between sex, family love and adventure with comedic grace. From all outward appearances, Lionel is a happy gay man with a great career and a modern, open minded, family who accepts his devoted lover Serge as one of their own. Then Lionel discovers he has Polish ancestors. Suddenly he’s immersing himself in all things Polish: food, language, etc. Things really heat up when he meets a pretty Polish immigrant facing deportation and decides to marry her. Taking charge, Lucy (Lionel’s sister) “borrows” Lionel’s company car for a road trip to Poland to discover the family roots.
Stealth was released on DVD in June of this year.
Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon: Long before Jeff Stryker and Michael Lucas, Jack Wrangler was the number one name in gay porn, and his wild, unpredictable career and life is recounted in this funny, smart and sexy documentary.
Directed by Jeffrey Schwarz and featuring: Jack Wrangler, Margaret Whiting, Bruce Vilanch, Marc Shaiman, and Michael Musto.
Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon is slated for October 28, 2008.
