Gay Greeting Card NewsWhen I go shopping for greeting cards I spend a lot of time selecting the perfect card. I try to find a card that matches both the occasion and the recipient perfectly. It’s a tough job sometimes trying to find a card with just the right artwork or photo and the right message.

I’m of the opinion that a simple greeting card can make a strong statement or impression. However, it hadn’t even occurred to me that a greeting card could evoke feelings of strong hate.

It’s amazing just what will raise the ire and hatred of certain religious wackos!

Late last week I happened to notice a piece of news via the AP that Hallmark Cards is now offering ‘gay marriage’ greeting cards. I haven’t noticed these cards in town or at their website, however apparently these cards are now available from some of their Hallmark card shops in the U.S.. The stores and in which states these cards are available in wasn’t mentioned in the article unfortunately. I got the impression that the writer did ask about that but that it was kind of a secret as to which stores were carrying ‘gay marriage’ cards. Some of the Hallmark stores were afraid of a backlash. As it turns out, they weren’t totally wrong. Soon after this initial news broke, I noticed that the right-wing American Family Association (AFA) was urging people to boycott Hallmark Cards and to buy American Greeting Cards instead.

Soon there were news and blog posts all over about gay marriage greeting cards. All of this hubbub over a piece of paper that’s meant to be given to a couple on their special happy day; a token of love…

…Love, is one of those funny four letter words that religious wackos love to toss around; except when it comes to being applied in real life situations.

Speaking of love and greeting cards…

Why haven’t these religious nutters boycotted the greeting card companies for making ‘pagan’ cards that celebrate a ‘pagan god’? I’m referring to Valentines Day cards of course. Cupid aka Eros…

And then there’s Halloween and Easter, both of which have plenty of ‘pagan’ connections and symbols attached to them. Of course they hate Halloween anyway but the card companies do sell Halloween cards and décor… And then of course there’s the biggest ‘pagan’ celebration in the ‘christian’ world ‘western culture’ – Christmas.

Greeting cards have become one of the many traditions associated with these holidays. Christmas and Valentines Day taking the lions share of the greeting card market of course. One would think that in order to maintain a semblance of consistency the nutters would call for a boycott on all of the greeting card companies because they sell cards that celebrate all of these ‘pagan’ holidays. Can you imagine a greeting card company caving into a demand to stop selling Christmas or Valentines Day cards? Considering the numbers involved, that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

I think that it’s cool that Hallmark has decided to diversify a bit and add to their card line; giving consumers one more choice when it comes to giving the perfect weeding card to their friends and family who’ve taken a loving leap.

I also believe that companies like Hallmark should ignore any negative criticisms about cards that celebrate a diverse range of tastes, holidays, events and people’s relationships. After all, selling a specific type of card it is not a reflection of ones own tastes, religious, or moral beliefs. I would also encourage other card companies both large and small to try a larger range of card lines.
