A new exhibition in Provincetown, Massachusetts at the Bowersock Gallery featuring international Dj Susan Morabito and artists Dustan Knight and Lauren Pollaor, opens September 12th.
Susan Morabito has made her mark being her own person. She’s one of the most preeminent and popular DJs working the national, gay scene. A leader and trend setter in the dance community she’s recently taken on a new challenge, turned the tables once again, and entered the world of visual art.
Morabito was the first female to work the gay clubs and remains one of the few on the male circuit scene, opening doors for female DJ’s that followed. After 20-plus years working the top clubs she’s a legend. But she inspires more than spinner and dancing feet according to Steve Bowersock, artist and owner of the Bowersock Gallery, Provincetown Mass. And he can attest to that.
“Most visual artists listen to music when they create – carefully select their accompanying music. They look for something that keeps them in the mood, the tone they’re trying to create. The right music helps them stay in the zone. The last thing you want while is for a ’soundtrack’ to pull you from your space,” he says. “Susan is the master weaver of the dreamscape sound. Many an artist has worked a canvas to her inspired compilations.”
Bowersock knows. He’s painted a large number of canvases to Morabito’s work. It was during one of his studio periods a thought came to mind he couldn’t shake. Would the work of visual art inspire Morabito?
“I have a number of artists that work in what I call the ‘key of Morabito.’ I thought they’d be a perfect match for Susan’s dreamscape style. Luckily so did Morabito.”
The “Dream of Music & Art” exhibition, Sept. 12 through October 7, will feature two of Bowersock’s stable artists, both from the art rich New Hampshire, Maine seacoast area.
Morabito will present a mix inspired by the artist’s work live, at the opening. It will also be available for listening throughout the exhibition.
“Susan is infamous for her sophisticated taste and selectiveness – even when it comes to the shows she’ll work. She’s known for passing on the main show and going with the later/smaller gig. What’s important to her is the event fits her style. So having her work with us is an incredible honor.”
Morabito’s reputation is a well deserved one Bowersock says. She doesn’t spin music; she takes you on a journey. “She immerses you in a world then moves you with it and through it. When it’s over, you, it and she are all in the same place. Susan is not a DJ. She’s a storyteller, a rare artist that uses the work of others to create something greater and more beautiful then the individual works. I thing her fans are going to be blown away with her sensitive interpretations of the work of these two visual artists.”
Dustan Knight is best known for her “juicy, large watercolors,” explains Bowersock. “Knight is in the forefront of this field, the rare watercolorist working on oversized canvases. The technical feat is impressive, but the images are amazing, lush and rich.”
Lauren Pollaro is the second artist selected for this special exhibition. Pollaro is both an assemblage artist and jeweler known for her distinctive style and masterful use of color.
“This is going to be an art-lovers dream, the marriage of three artists at the top of their game,” says Bowersock. “I highly suggest you take a break and enter this exceptional, temporary, world. – It’s going to be an incredible experience.”
