The National Post has an interesting and ’somewhat’ balanced story on B.C.’s new ‘Gay Friendly’ education curriculum.

The National Post Summary: “As children across the country return to school, the National Post takes a look at the curriculum issues that are flashpoints in their respective regions and examines how the most controversial subjects are taught. Today, gay rights education.”

This is actually a story they ran yesterday, (Tuesday) and it has the rather unfortunate title/headline: When Jill wants to be a Jack

From what I’ve been able to find out and it’s been a bit difficult, (maybe I’m not searching hard enough) but it’s not really about ‘gay rights education’ — the ‘gay friendly’ aspect of the new curriculum is part of a larger Social Justice curriculm that happens to include dealing with homophobia in the classroom. So no, it’s not a course in Homosexuality 101; it’s learning about social injustices.

Also of interest in this article is that Peter and Murray Corren, who have been fighting for changes in the B.C. education curriculm for quite some time are featured.

Talking about homosexuality in B.C. classrooms in the past has been the subject of much debate and even as I recall a few lawsuits from the Christian right wing. Hopefully, this new addition to the curriculm is the start of something good.
