My Moving Marriage

One evening, a couple of months ago, Ian my partner of nine years proposed to me right after watching Funny Lady. My immediate response was: ‘So, that’s what Barbra does to you eh?’

Our wedding took place late September and ever since it’s been a frenzied state of events. The wedding itself was a small yet wonderful affair, conducted in our home in Victoria, by a longtime friend of ours who happens to also be a Unitarian minister. Both of my parents were present as were two other longtime friends of ours. After the touching ceremony, we all trooped down the street to a Greek restaurant where we all enjoyed a wonderful and filling meal in an almost private setting. It would have been nice to invite a lot of friends and family to have shared this evening with, however, due to the time constraints it just wasn’t possible.

Two weeks later, we packed up a few of our essentials (including our cat) in a trailer and our Land Rover and made the journey east to Nova Scotia to set up our ‘new’ second home in a lovely but neglected Centre Hall Colonial. If you’re a regular reader here at Gay News Bits, you may recall that earlier in the year we had gone on vacation in Nova Scotia and that we both fell in love with it; especially the small town we discovered.

The journey across Canada was a wonderful but hurried trip. The original plan called for plenty of stops and visits along the way; plans change though, especially when you’re traveling with a cat. Still, it was nice for the most part. Highlights of the trip included: Going across The Rockies, (always awe inspiring); Stopping off at Tim Hortons at least once a day right across the country, (Yeah, we could have done that Tim Hortons commercial…); Camping out at a good number of Husky Truck Stops; The shower at the PetroCan (the best shower I’ve had in ages); Discovering that gas gets cheaper the closer you get to Ottawa… Those are just a few of the highlights of our trip; there’s just so much. If you ever get the chance to travel across Canada by car or truck, do so. Oh yeah, speaking of trucks – if you want to know what’s happening across the country, talk to the truckers; they’re a fountain of information.

Most annoying part of our journey? — Trying to convince a credit card customer service rep from a phone at a gas station or store that: A.) You don’t need their permission to travel. B.) That Canada is a large country which includes several provinces that you can traverse in a fairly short amount of time if you’re so inclined.

So, what’s next for us? Well, now that we’ve arrived in Nova Scotia, we’re setting up house, renovating our living space, fixing things up, doing a lot of shopping, (our shopping list seems to be growing) and doing all the things one needs to do when they move to a new home; only more so. In addition, I’ve been setting up my new office and getting my online affairs in order – that’s a chore and a half…

All in all though, we’re both excited about what new adventures we’re having and going to be having in the next chapter of our life together.
