News on California Court Cases(Los Angeles, CA) — A coalition of 27 groups fighting for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights today is urging Ventura County prosecutors to try 14-year-old Brandon McInerney in juvenile court, and not as an adult. McInerney has been charged as an adult in the February 12 murder of his E.O. Green Middle School classmate, 15-year-old Lawrence King. Students say McInerney targeted King because the victim was openly gay and because he wore women’s jewelry and makeup. Read more

Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student in Oxnard, Calif., was shot in the head Tuesday morning during a class at E.O. Green Junior High, by a classmate. King was declared brain dead, but his body remains on a ventilator for possible organ donation. According to the Associated Press, the Ventura County prosecutor has filed charges of attempted murder with a hate-crime enhancement, but can’t discuss the facts behind the case. Read more
